Corporate Training

You Promoted Them For Being Excellent. No One Taught Them To Lead.

The most common management gap isn't a skills gap. It's a training gap that was never closed.

Most organizations promote their best individual contributors into supervisory and management roles — then hand them a team, a set of KPIs, and no formal preparation for either. CAPEX closes that gap directly: structured, case-based management training designed around what a cohort needs to be able to do differently once they're back at their desks, not what they can recite in a workshop.

The Diagnosis

The Gap Shows Up the Same Way, Almost Everywhere

Whether it's a first-time supervisor or someone who has run a team for a decade, the pattern repeats: strong technical performers are promoted into people leadership without ever being formally taught how to do it. The result isn't incompetence — it's improvisation, at scale, on things that shouldn't be improvised.

1

Tenure isn't the same as training

A supervisor with eight years in the role who was never taught to delegate has the same foundational gap as someone promoted last month. Experience doesn't substitute for structure.

2

The cost shows up downstream

Untrained management shows up later as staff turnover, inconsistent performance management, slow decision-making, and grievances that a structured conversation could have prevented.

3

Generic soft-skills training isn't enough on its own

Slide decks build awareness. They don't build judgment. Judgment is built by making a real decision, under real pressure, and being challenged on it — which is why case method matters.

4

The need doesn't stop at "new manager"

Seasoned managers face a different gap — stakeholder complexity, ambiguity, and decisions with no clean answer — that first-year training was never designed to cover.

The Programs

One Foundation. Two Ways to Build On It.

Every course below can be booked as a standalone one-day session, or combined into a structured multi-course program for your team. Nothing here assumes prior management training.

Phase One

Universal Foundation

The core every manager needs, regardless of tenure — coaching, delegation, feedback, trust, conflict, decision-making, time management, active listening, influence, and psychological safety.

Phase Two — Track A

Strategic Execution

For managers ready to think, decide, and deliver at a broader organizational level — change, reasoning under ambiguity, strategy, and the discipline of carrying a plan through to delivery.

Phase Two — Track B

People & Conflict

For managers ready to handle the harder human problems — entrenched conflict, difficult people, and the conversations most managers avoid until they can't any longer.

Phase One — Universal Foundation

Core Skills for First-Time and Never-Trained Managers

Ten one-day courses. Book the full track as a structured program, or individual courses to close a specific gap.

01 Coaching Skills for Managers
1-day session ▾

Moves managers from directing to developing — structured coaching conversations that build a team's own problem-solving capacity instead of routing every question back to the manager.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Run a structured coaching conversation using open questions instead of instructions
  • Judge when to coach and when to simply direct
  • Reduce time spent solving problems their team is capable of solving themselves
02 Delegation Skills
1-day session ▾

Separates authority, responsibility, and accountability, and addresses the real reasons delegation fails — including the instinct that it's "faster to do it myself."

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Delegate a task with clear accountability, not just a handoff
  • Match delegation style to each team member's experience level
  • Free up time for higher-level work without losing oversight of outcomes
03 Giving & Receiving Effective Feedback
1-day session ▾

Builds confidence in both directions of feedback — delivering it in a way that changes behavior, and receiving it without becoming defensive.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Deliver feedback that changes behavior rather than triggering defensiveness
  • Receive critical feedback professionally, without shutting down
  • Build a team habit of ongoing feedback instead of saving everything for annual reviews
04 Building Trust in the Workplace
1-day session ▾

Covers the concrete behaviors that build or erode trust — consistency, transparency, openness to feedback — and how different people read trust differently.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Diagnose where a team's trust is thin — delegation, communication, or follow-through
  • Adapt their own trust-building approach to different personalities
  • Delegate and empower with less need for constant monitoring
05 Conflict Management
1-day session ▾

Practical techniques for handling conflict constructively — neither avoiding it until it festers, nor letting it escalate into something personal.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Intervene early in a brewing dispute, before it hardens into a formal grievance
  • Run a structured conversation between two team members in conflict
  • Distinguish productive task conflict from destructive relationship conflict, and respond to each differently
06 Decision-Making
1-day session ▾

Introduces structured decision-making tools and root-cause analysis, and names the common distractions and biases that quietly derail workplace decisions.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Apply a root-cause tool instead of reacting to symptoms
  • Recognize their own decision-making biases in the moment
  • Make and defend a decision under incomplete information without stalling
07 Time Management
1-day session ▾

Covers prioritization, realistic goal-setting, and handling the constant interruptions that come with managing people, not just tasks.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Prioritize competing demands with a structured framework, not "whoever asks loudest"
  • Protect time for planning and higher-value work
  • Reduce reactive, interruption-driven days
08 Active Listening Skills
1-day session ▾

Treats listening as a trainable behavioral skill, not a personality trait — including reading non-verbal cues and adapting listening style to the conversation.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Run a one-to-one where the employee, not the manager, does most of the talking
  • Notice what a team member isn't saying, not just what they are
  • De-escalate a tense conversation by demonstrating real understanding before responding
09 Influencing Skills
1-day session ▾

Builds the ability to move people to action through trust and rapport rather than positional authority alone.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Gain buy-in from a peer or senior stakeholder without formal authority over them
  • Build a case that moves people to act, not just one that informs them
  • Adapt their influencing approach to the audience in front of them
10 Psychological Safety
1-day session ▾

Builds a team climate where people speak up, admit mistakes, and give real-time feedback without fear of embarrassment or reprisal.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Create team conditions where problems surface early rather than being hidden until they escalate
  • Respond to a mistake in a way that encourages future honesty, not future concealment
  • Run discussions where junior staff are willing to challenge the manager's thinking
Phase Two — By Invitation, on Completion of Phase One

Two Tracks. Same Standing. Different Judgment.

Phase Two isn't sold alongside Phase One — it's earned by completing it. Every manager starts from the same foundation; Phase Two is where that foundation gets tested against real complexity. Track A and Track B are equal in standing, length, and rigor — a division chooses based on which judgment gap its managers actually have, not because one path is shorter or lighter than the other.

Every module in both tracks is taught using the Harvard Business School case method — this isn't a separate topic, it's how all ten modules are delivered.

Track A — Strategic Execution

Upward and outward judgment: thinking strategically, deciding under ambiguity, and carrying a plan through to delivery.

A1 Change Management
1-day session ▾

Leading a team through organizational change — addressing fear and resistance directly, and sustaining the change well past the initial announcement. Sets the organizational context for the rest of the track: why execution is hard in the first place.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Lead their team through change without losing morale or output
  • Anticipate where resistance will come from and address it directly, rather than hope it passes
  • Sustain a change past the initial rollout, when enthusiasm typically fades
A2 Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving
1-day session ▾

Combines structured problem-solving with rigorous critical thinking — both are, at core, the discipline of reasoning through an ambiguous situation rather than reacting to the first plausible explanation.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Separate symptoms from root causes before proposing a fix
  • Pressure-test a recommendation before it goes to senior leadership
  • Make and defend a position that withstands challenge from more senior stakeholders
A3 Strategic Thinking
1-day session ▾

Builds the big-picture, direction-setting layer on top of structured reasoning — long-term thinking, workplace analysis, and scenario planning using tools such as SWOT and PESTLE.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Step back from day-to-day operations to assess longer-term risks and opportunities
  • Use a structured framework to analyze a business situation, not just instinct
  • Set a strategic goal that a team can actually act on, not just a slogan
A4 Strategy Execution (CAPEX original)
1-day session ▾

An original CAPEX module, not licensed off a shelf — built from the founder's own Harvard Business School Online study of strategy execution, in his own words and examples, anchored by an original CAPEX-authored case. Converts direction into an actual implementation plan: resource allocation, organizational alignment, and the operating rhythms that make a strategy real rather than a slide.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Translate a strategic goal into a concrete resourcing and sequencing plan
  • Recognize where a strategy is likely to stall in execution, before it does
  • Build the operating rhythm — reviews, checkpoints, ownership — that keeps a strategy alive past the launch meeting
A5 Project Management for Non-Managers
1-day session ▾

Practical project planning, stakeholder mapping, and task organization — the tactical toolkit that carries a plan out day to day, for people running projects without formal project management training.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Plan and sequence a project without formal project management training
  • Assign roles and timelines clearly enough that delivery doesn't rely on constant chasing
  • Recognize and flag project risk early, rather than at the deadline

Track B — People & Conflict

Downward and lateral judgment: the harder human problems most managers learn to avoid rather than resolve.

B1 Emotional Intelligence
1-day session ▾

Builds self-awareness and emotional self-management under pressure, using Goleman's model — the foundation the rest of this track is built on, since every difficult interaction below starts with managing your own reaction first.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Recognize their own emotional reactions in the moment, before those reactions drive a decision
  • Apply a structured technique to regain composure under pressure
  • Read a team member's emotional state accurately enough to respond appropriately, not reflexively
B2 Conflict Management (advanced)
1-day session ▾

Builds on Phase One's foundations to handle conflict that's already entrenched — long-running team disputes, cross-departmental friction, and conflict that has outlasted a first, simple intervention.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Intervene in a long-running dispute that earlier, lighter attempts failed to resolve
  • Mediate between two team members — or two teams — with a structured, neutral process
  • Recognize when a conflict has become personal rather than task-based, and adjust their approach accordingly
B3 Managing Difficult People at Work
1-day session ▾

Identifying types of difficult behavior and their root causes, and applying assertive communication and active listening to manage them constructively rather than avoiding them.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Identify what's actually driving a colleague's disruptive behavior, not just the behavior itself
  • Respond assertively to a difficult team member without escalating the situation
  • Set and hold a boundary with a difficult personality without damaging the working relationship
B4 Difficult Conversations
1-day session ▾

Applies emotional intelligence to the conversations most managers avoid, over-soften, or handle too bluntly — performance issues, terminations, and conflict conversations that carry real consequences either way.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Have a performance conversation directly, without either softening it into meaninglessness or delivering it harshly
  • Prepare for and conduct a conversation they've been avoiding, with a structured approach rather than winging it
  • Deliver consistent, fair difficult conversations across their team, not ad hoc ones
B5 Coaching Skills for Managers (advanced)
1-day session ▾

Builds on Phase One's coaching foundations to coach through the situations basic coaching conversations don't cover — sustained underperformance, a team member who's disengaged, and coaching after a difficult conversation has already happened.

A trained cohort will be able to:

  • Coach a persistently underperforming team member without defaulting to instruction or discipline alone
  • Re-engage a team member who has become disengaged or checked out
  • Sustain a coaching relationship through a difficult period, not just a single good conversation
How These Are Built

Evidence-Based Foundations, Elevated by Case Method

These aren't generic slide decks. Every course is built in three layers.

The Foundation

Evidence-Based Course Design

Each course starts from a professionally researched instructional base — structured learning objectives, practical activities, and facilitator frameworks, not improvised content.

The Elevation

HBS Case Method & Further Research

Every course is adapted and deepened with additional research, the Harvard Business School case method, and — for Phase Two — properly licensed HBS case studies used unmodified as reinforcement, alongside original CAPEX-authored cases where no licensed case fits.

The Delivery

Personal, Case-Trained Facilitation

Every session is delivered personally by CAPEX's Founder & Group CEO — FCCA, MBA (Warwick), AMA-CPM, HBS Online-certified, with Big 4 and multi-company C-suite experience.
